Australian radar technology takes a global lead – don't limit your horizons

Don’t limit your horizons

A strong focus on research and development and innovation is what keeps CEA Technologies ahead globally, says David Gaul a Warren Centre Governor and one of the founders of the company that specialises in the design, development and manufacture of radar and communication systems. "The secret is to have a global focus from day one – don’t limit your horizons," David says.

Since its establishment nearly 20 years ago, CEA has developed radar and communication technologies that have gained international recognition. The company’s first task was to improve an existing communications system for the Royal Australian Navy. From this initial success, the company then continued to support defence, while developing elements of their own systems for communications and radar applications. This culminated in the development of a radar system for port surveillance, with the assistance of federal funding, for the ports of Melbourne and Brisbane.

This system sparked interest from the US military and has led to significant overseas orders over the years for CEA’s radar and communication systems which now represent a major portion of on-going export sales.

A number of products have subsequently been developed by CEA to meet the US and the Australian customer requirements, in a wide field of applications, underpinning the growth potential of the company.

CEA’s latest development is an active phased array radar system which has applications in marine, airborne and land based radar systems.

CEA’s Board has supported the investment in and the development of a centre of excellence in research and development. The R&D continues to be converted into new and innovative products and systems. CEA has also fostered a dedicated and innovative workforce, growing from two people in 1983 to over 160 staff, with a turnover of $26 million.

CEA can now compete successfully with much larger multinational companies in the international marketplace, thanks to its combination of leading edge technology and competitive position.
