Young
ideas for a sustainable future prove a winner
A vision for sustainable transport in Sydney has
won the Young Transport Professional of the Year (NSW) award.
Dr David Thorp, who proposed an intersecting network of bus routes that provide a
frequent, flexible service, accepted his award, saying "change happens, embrace
it."
He said the older generation of transport planners need to support the implementation of
the ideas of the younger generation to create a more sustainable transport system. Dr
Thorp put forward a compelling case that public transport needs to stop being a second
option to the car in his report, Strategies for Growth in Public Transport. Public
transport should provide a real and viable alternative transport mode for commuters, he
argued. To achieve this, public transport services need to meet the dominant market of
dispersed travel demand.
He points out the current market failure of public transport to cater for the 80 per cent
of Sydney trips that are non-work and cross-suburb. Public transport attracts only 6 per
cent of these trips.
To meet this need, Dr Thorp has proposed a Sydney Overground strategy: a
metropolitan wide, intersecting network of bus routes with a frequent, flexible service
that operates in a manner similar to the British underground, only above ground. A core
component of the system is creating efficient interchanges rather than trying to provide
routes that serve all trips from beginning to end.
Thorps report for the Warren Centre will be published as part of the Sustainable
Transport project.
