Without Peer – Australia's first Chief Naval Engineer

A dominant figure in Australian maritime affairs is profiled in the latest of The Warren Centre monographs on Australia’s great engineers.

Sir William Clarkson KBE CMG rose quickly through the ranks of the Royal Australian Navy and is acknowledged as pre-eminent in the nation’s maritime affairs for both his administrative and technical skills.

Sir William began his career as a naval engineer at the end of the 19th century. After 20 years of running the engine room of the sole warship of South Australia’s colonial navy, he joined the Commonwealth naval forces. He became a dominant figure in Australian maritime affairs as a senior officer within the Royal Australian Navy and in government administrative circles. Sir William was appointed the third naval member of the Naval Board which administered the new Royal Australian Navy and was made Vice-Admiral on his retirement in 1922, becoming the second officer and only engineer ever to reach this rank.

In an age when opportunities for technicians to mount the national stage were few, Sir William’s rise and remarkable contribution to Australia’s development in the maritime field entitle him to be regarded as one of the nation’s great engineers.
