Medical Device Network generates strong support

Though in its early stages, the Medical Device Network (MDN) aims to facilitate the development of an Australian medical device industry and has already received over 500 expressions of interest.

An initiative of the Warren Centre, the MDN is a national organisation that aims to cater for individuals and organisations throughout the entire product lifecycle including clinicians, innovators, funders, incubators, patent attorneys, developers, manufacturers, marketers and users.

Its objectives include:

  • improving the success rate of start-up companies
  • fostering R&D and manufacturing
  • acting as an independent voice for the Australian medical device industry
  • providing commercial training and professional development
  • connecting the entire medical device community
  • projecting the Australian medical device industry to the world.

It is planned that the MDN will act as a hub, connecting product developers with the services they need, linking clinicians and researchers with funding bodies, and helping industry to exploit their inventions.

The MDN developed from a Warren Centre roundtable in 2000 which looked at biomaterials and identified that more interaction between researchers, manufacturers and clinicians in the wider field of medical devices would benefit all concerned.

Arrangements to establish an infrastructure for the MDN’s operation are well advanced and an announcement at the MeDIC II conference in Sydney (March 2002) indicated that Aus Biotech would probably provide the administrative structure for the ongoing MDN..

Many people have contributed to the establishment of the MDN and though it is impossible to mention them all, Dr Derrick Beech (Project Champion), Dr Janice Hirshorn and Mr Crispin Marsh have played key roles and have committed much time, energy and persistence to the project, which has been supported by ResMed, Cochlear and Johnson & Johnson Research.
